Exclusive: Deluxe floorboards made of Larch or Douglas fir

Noble softwoods for the choice Alpine flair home style

We have selected two particularly noble softwoods to manufacture our Château by adler Deluxe floorboards: Douglas fir from our local forests in the South of Germany and Larch from the Styrian alpine forests.

Larch has a fine texture with very attractive configurations of knots. Its colour is harmonious. After treatment with reddish or white pigmented natural oil, the wood will have just a slight red-yellowish sheen. We will process Larch for the hard growth rings to stand slightly proud, rendering the wood more resistant to wear.

The story behind the local Douglas fir is quite interesting: The natural Douglas fir habitat is in the West of North America, where it grows on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains and also in the Cascades along the Sierra Nevada, extending down to Mexico. In the 19th Century, Scottish Botanist David Douglas introduced the tree (named after him) to Kew Gardens in London. The Douglas fir has since then been cultivated in Central Europe also. It is found in Germany predominantly in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria.

The Douglas fir is harder than the Larch, has a finer, more reddish colour, wider growth rings and with a larger pattern of knots. We will texture the Douglas fir also by emphasising the harder growth rings. This will render it even more resistant to wear.

We can offer the Douglas fir Deluxe floorboards with 2 different surfaces: with their natural reddish tone or treated to appear white, allowing the attractive wide and long floorboards to match interior styles of any colour scheme.

What you also need to know about our Douglas fir or Larch Deluxe flooring

Douglas fir long floorboards and Larch Deluxe floorboards contain no additional formaldehyde and have general technical building authority approval.

Range of dimensions Château by adler Douglas fir and Larch

The softwood floorboards are 19 millimetres thick and have a 5 millimetre thick top layer made of sawcut veneer.

Douglas fir floorboard widths range from 160 to 350 millimetres, but we will on request also produce fixed widths, i.e. a single width. The floorboards are available in lengths of 1.8 to 5.0 metres. We can also produce lengths up to 10.8 meters to suit the length of your room.

Larch trees are slimmer than Douglas fir trees. The range of Larch floorboard widths is correspondingly more limited, ranging from 180 mm to 300 mm. Lengths range from 3.0 m to 5.0 meters. We cannot offer Larch floorboards in fixed widths and lengths.

Grading Château by adler Douglas and Larch

You will normally receive all the “Château by adler” parquet floorboards graded “Standard”.

The texture of the long and wide Deluxe floorboards may exhibit minor shrinkage and wind cracks. The large dimensions and natural shrinkage may also encourage minor surface cracks due to stress and drying.

Very thin small splits in the surface are typical for Douglas.

Surface treatment & colour variations Château by adler Douglas fir and Larch

All Douglas fir and Larch floorboard surfaces have a machine brush-finished wood texture which we will refine using our NATURA+ oxidative surface treatment. Brushing will cause the hard growth rings to stand proud, rendering the surface even more resistant to wear.

Wood is a natural product. Colour deviations should therefore be expected, especially on stained surfaces. Colour pigments may produce varying hues, depending on the substances contained in the wood and the grain of the specific wood. These colour variations may occur between different product batches but also in a single batch.

Laying & underfloor heating Château by adler Douglas fir and Larch

The Deluxe floorboard comprises 3 layers with 19 millimetre overall thickness. The large widths and lengths require full spread gluing.

The thermal resistance of the multi-layered Deluxe floorboards is ca. 0.16 m²k / W (as per EN 14342), thus rendering it suitable for laying on hot water underfloor heating.

The maximum surface temperature of 26°C should not be exceeded. Please refer to our laying instructions under Downloads

Care & ambient room conditions Château by adler Douglas fir and Larch

Your high grade and customised softwood floorboards will need special care if you wish to enjoy your floor for years to come.

Always ensure that your ambient room conditions remain healthy to ensure both your own health and that of your parquet floor. A relative humidity of ca. 50 – 60% and room temperatures between 19 and 22°C would be ideal. Your wooden floor may be damaged unless these guideline values are maintained. The danger of drying out exists especially during heating periods, potentially causing shrinkage cracks in the worst case. Normally such cracks will, however, largely close up again as the room climate improves. The glued layers may also experience shrinkage stress in the event of sudden moisture change.

Certification options Château by adler Douglas fir and Larch

We may also on your request offer our Deluxe floorboards in Larch or Douglas fir as 100% PEFC certified parquet flooring. Depending on the wood sources we also might be able to offer a FSC® certified product. Please contact us in this respect.
